Choose a Container

Your imagination is your only limit when choosing what to plant succulents into. The great thing about succulents is their ability to survive in the unlikeliest of conditions. If you can, pick a container that allows water to freely drain away. If not, consider drilling or poking holes, as succulents don't like having their feet wet for long periods of time. Scrounge around your home, back shed, local op-shop or salvage yard - You would be amazed at what spectacular artworks you can make out of a tin can, a shoe or even a log.

Potting Mediums

If you can fit potting mix into your container, then please do. Be sure to use a good quality cacti and succulent potting mix. Your plants will thrive for longer in potting mix over other mediums as they will have access to more nutrients. You can prevent potting mix falling out by placing sphagnum moss on top and securing it with fishing line or wire. If potting mix doesn't suit the container, you can plant into sphagnum moss alone. With adequate moisture and light, succulents can survive like this for a couple of months. Apply a liquid fertiliser/seaweed solution to them, and they will keep thriving for even longer.

Choose your Succulents

Again, your imagination is the limit. If you feel overwhelmed by all the different varieties of succulents out there, don't fret - Here are some simple tips to help you choose:

Colours
Consider different colour combinations that work with the colour of your container - Contrasting colours offer a vibrant look, where analogous colours are more natural and harmonious.
Heights
Combining different heights will give you a fantastic dynamic look. Place tall succulents in the centre of your design as a focal point, then small trailing succulents around the edges. Fill in the gaps with medium sized succulents. The effect will be a balanced look that is pleasing to the eye.
Balance
Use an odd number of multiples for particular species - It will balance out your design. Place multiples in a triangular pattern so that they are equally spaced apart.
Quantities
Don't be afraid to pack many succulents into a small space. Succulents are more than happy to coexist with each other in tight places. Plus it will help to make your arrangement look more compact and lush.

Be Creative!

Go to town! Try things! If it doesn't seem to be working, pull out the plants and try again! Once you are happy with your project, water it in thoroughly. Place in a spot with adequate filtered light, and prune regularly to keep the foliage compact and lush.
